In my previous article What You Need to Know to Start a Website I wrote about defining the goals, audience and other such things. I also mentioned that a website should be built around the content, not the other way around. What did I mean by that? Below I am giving you some examples of how the content affects design and layout of the site Please take a look and let me know what you think.
Different types of web sites:
Brochure sites
Brochures sites are based on providing information about a company/individual/organization/etc. The main focus of these sites is to appeal to new clients and provide their contact information for the old ones. Usually sites like these are not updated very often, however, they should be maintained on a regular basis, since the information can become outdated after a while. These kinds of sites rely both on images and text, depending on the industry.

Brochure Website - Mcc Technologies

Brochure Website - Rejuvenate Face and Body Spa

Brochure Website - Kingdom Landscapes
Blogs
Do you have a hobby you are very passionate about? Are you looking to build up traffic to your site? Are you trying to rank higher on Search Engines? Well, if you answer, yes, then Blog is your answer. I like to think of blogs as newspapers of the internet, only when newspapers are written by certain editors, a blog can be written by anyone. Blogs need to be updated very regularly to keep the traffic and readers coming – some say at least 3 times a week – and should be limited to a particular topic. You know it is a blog if you see a number of dated articles going far below under the fold.

Blog Design - Abduzeedo Blog

Blog Design - Web Designer Wall

Blog Design - Design Informer Blog
Ecommerce
Do you have products to sell? Well, then Ecommerce is the answer. These websites will allow you to make sales online and promote your company as well as your products. They usually rely heavily on product display (images) and little text.

Ecommerce Design - Beach Bunny Swimwear

Ecommerce Website - Joe's Jeans

Ecommerce Design - Victoria's Secret Online Store
Portfolios
Are you a creative person? If yes, then this is your answer. Portfolios let creatives show off their work and promote their services to potential clients. In my opinion, portfolios should be very simple to not take away the eye of the visitor from the work displayed. Portfolios rely heavily on images and very little text.

Portfolio Design - Micilin Photographer

Portfolio Site - Noe Design Studio

This is a good companion piece to “What You Need To Know To Start A Website. You give such a clear, accurate portrayal of what qualities these different websites have. It’s a great visual guide for designers starting out. I found it very helpful.
Great article. Quite often we have clients come to us asking for “A website” and it falls to us to help them understand the different formats and layouts and what will get them to where they want to be. I can see this being an excellent resource for both designers and clients alike.
Thanks!
