I do believe that we draw inspiration nearly from everything that surrounds us, that includes movies. In this series I will introduce you to some of the most visually stunning movies I was lucky enough to come across.
Kytice (Wild Flowers) is a hauntingly beautiful Czech film made by F.A. Brabec. This film was recommended to me by one of my readers Paulina (big thanks).
Here is a short review of the film taken from here:
F.A. Brabec did an amazing job of directing “Kytice” (wildflowers), which is based on the book “the Seven Ballads”. I’m not familiar with the novel, but I must say that the seven Czech fairy tales within the film are extremely nightmarish. These are not fairy tales to read to children before bedtime… The stories teach bizarre moral lessons, and people end up paying for their bad choices. The cinematography is gorgeous, and should be studied by film students everywhere. The movie is dark, but very moving and filled with colorful life… The soundtrack is haunting and will stay with you long after the film is over. In fact I ended up buying the soundtrack, and it is excellent. “Kytice” reminds me of Kurasawa’s “Dreams”, “Big Fish” and “Valerie and her Week of Wonders” all rolled into one bizarre dream. The Czech Republic is a country that’s film industry remains undiscovered by western audiences. I have yet to watch a Czech film that I didn’t like.
Unfortunately, this film is pretty much impossible to find in the US (believe me, I tried. If you come across a link to buy the DVD, please let me know). The film is only 81 minutes long, each story time varies between 20 and 5 minutes. I am including the first part of the movie on the bottom of my post as well as a link to the full movie on youtube. The quality is not amazing, but I am afraid it is the only way we can view this piece of art (except taking a trip to Czech Republic haha).
Also, before I move on to the screenshots and the movie itself, I wanted to ask you if you think posting screenshots helps to convey a movie. I always feel like stills just don’t do justice to a moving image, but on the other hand, it might be a good introduction. What do you think?
Anyway, back to the movie.

Have you seen any other movies you’d consider “Inspiration-worthy”?
Feel free to share your picks and if I post them, I will make sure to give you credit

You can buy this DVD here in EU for 3-4€ (3-4$), but they unfortunately don’t ship to US.
I am so glad you like this movie! And I think the stills definitely help. I looked and looked for a way to buy it and the only way I found is from an online store in the Czech Republic. They will ship to the US, but I was worried about my credit card info… So I recommended to my university library that they make the purchase and they said they will! So hopefully I’ll be able to watch it in it’s full glory soon.
